AON Pensions Barometer 2006
With the Pensions Time Bomb› ticking and the ongoing pension reforms in Europe, Aon Consulting has released the latest version of its European Pensions Barometer.
One of the key issues for multi-national companies is the choice of where to site operations, and one of the factors in this choice is labour cost. A significant component of labour costs in all advanced economies is the provision for old age, both through social security contributions and private pension arrangements. While companies can easily know both the costs and the issues of the present day, it is much more difficult to predict changes in the future. The Barometer endeavours to analyse the pressures on pension systems in the EU countries. The aim is to determine which systems are under the greatest pressure, so that material change is likely to be forced to occur in the medium to long term. Such a change could affect labour costs.

UK: Pension scheme funding: Too much unexplained variation
There remains enormous unexplained variation in the results of actuarial valuations to determine pension scheme liabilities, says a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, based on a recent survey of 90 UK pension schemes with almost £200bn of assets.
Life expectancy predictions differ by up to six years without any correlation to industry, pay, type or location of workforce, or actual scheme experience. Discount rates, which represent the assumed future return of a scheme’s assets, bear little correlation to actual asset allocation, varying by as much as 3% per annum for schemes with similar asset allocations.

The U.S. an increasingly unalluring place to do business?
Reports argue that overzealous regulation—as epitomized by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the anti-fraud law passed after the Enron and WorldCom scandals—is making the U.S. an increasingly unalluring place to do business. Unless such regulatory excesses are curbed, they say, New York will soon lose its position as the world’s financial capital.

«L’ONU cherche banque; 11 milliards à placer»
